mods - working in spiral not joined rounds;
size - 9.5” long x 8” around (foot), 9.5” long x 7.25” around (sock)

  • pattern - I chose size lady’s 5/6 for my foot length (ch 9 start). However, from gauge calculations it appears the pattern is written for a broad foot or positive ease (54 sc at gauge is almost 10” around) with a little negative ease on length. As my foot is a bit narrow and I don’t like much negative ease on length (particularly with non-elastic sc fabric), I made adjustments…
  • circumference - starting chain 9 gave good width for my toe but I increased to only 42 stitches for 0.75” negative ease on my 8” circumference foot
  • length - zero negative ease (I had planned for a little negative ease on length but found on fitting that the fabric didn’t stretch enough as I’d made the circumference snug)

what I did
toe - I lengthened the toe to 2” (pattern (lady’s 5/6) 10 toe rounds only 1.6”) by alternating no-increase rounds with the 6 increase rounds I needed to get from 18 to 42 stitches

foot - As I had a 2” toe & intended to make a 2” heel to match, I worked 5.5” of non-increase rounds for the foot till I had 50 rounds and 7.5” from the toe tip

heel prep - Because I worked in a spiral there was no need to finish off & no need to hide a seam - I just finished at side of sock (a few stitches short of the end of the round - no problems); worked sc across top side (20), worked 22 chains, skipped 22sc and rejoined to work in spiral. (I ignored the instruction to chain 2 fewer than skipped as I had made the foot less wide and wanted a slightly widened instep & top. I also wanted 14 rounds for a heel to match the toe and 44 decreased by 4 on alternative rounds down to 16 works out just right.) (Next time I would work fsc instead of chain on the heel prep as there is a slight tightness at that point. I had avoided the fsc because I thought it would make too defined a line of difference but the change of direction does that anyway so getting some stretch wins.)

leg - I continued sc around on 42 stitches for 7 rounds to a height of 1”

cuff - I worked as per pattern alternating hdc with fpdc but changed the set up round to just hdc to avoid little gaps above the chains

heel - I joined just before side where I had started the chain for the afterthought heel as I noticed a small hole there and wanted to have to yarn tail to close it up. I joined by ss 1 stitch to the right of 1st stitch to be worked then sc across as pattern (this avoids a nasty bump by having to do a chain after ss into 1st stitch itself); pattern has no special treatment for corners but I picked up some slack in the corners on each side by working sc2tog over last sc of side & a loop in the corner, then sc2tog again over another loop in the corner & first sc of side; in video Mikey closes the holes with a darning needle but I found with these pick ups I only needed to ‘close’ a gap at the start of the chain with my yarn tail. I then worked the pairs of decreases next to each other on the sides (pattern has a single sc in between but I liked the look of the pairs next to each other and they were easier to find (no markers!). I worked the 7 decrease rounds alternating with 7 non-decrease rounds so that the heel was 14 rounds deep to match the toe, finishing with 16 stitches.
