Notes

My colleague Angelynn perhaps unwisely complained within my hearing of how her Newfie mittens did not fit her properly. I offered to make her another pair. Then she ended up asking for this design instead—she sent me a picture she found on Pinterest and asked if this would be “too hard.”

Stripes are not particularly difficult, so I decided to add a bit more challenge to this task by double-knitting the mittens to make them reversible. I did this last year for my friend Amanda. Since then I’ve come around to the idea that ribbing doesn’t work great with double knitting (because double knitting is itself a type of ribbing), so I did the cuffs in stockinette.

I’d forgotten how stripes tend to jog in the round! Nevertheless, because I was double knitting I decided not to try some of the various clever methods of adjusting these and live with the seam.

Here’s a rough pattern for future reference:

CO 24 pairs of stitches for double knitting on 3.5 mm. Join to work in the round.

Knit stockinette for 3 inches or until cuff is desired length.

Switch to 3.75 mm needles and increase evenly to 32 pairs of sts.

Knit 2 rows of contrast colour. On second row, with 3 pairs of sts left at the end of the round, begin the thumb gusset. Gusset will be 18 rounds with 13 pairs sts, increase followed by 2 even rounds.

While working gusset, alternate colours every 2 rounds. When gusset is complete, put the thumb stitches on waste yarn. Continue working mitten in stripes until ready for closure (in my case, closure is 1 inch).

Switch to closure yarn (red here) and knit one round evenly. Then begin closure spiral decrease. Cut yarn with 5 pairs of sts left on needle and pull ends through respective layers.

Pick up thumb pairs and knit in pattern until desired length. Decrease 4 sts per round, then cut yarn and pull ends through respective layers.

Weave in ends. I also added conductive thread to both layers for maximum phone friendliness.
