Notes

Amanda wants mittens for her birthday, and I decided this is a great opportunity to try thrumming for the first time. This pair is a test pair for myself so I can make mistakes before I make her pair.

One mitten down, one to go! I’m super happy with how this is working out.

I’ve definitely learned a lot from doing a test pair—mostly around how thick my thrums should be.

All done! Overall, I’m happy with the results! However, I also learned a lot:

  • Doing a gauge swatch, and washing it, is really important because of how the mitten will be knit over-sized. I swatched and washed the yarns I’m using for my other two pairs, and now I’ve decided to go down a needle size.
  • Going down a needle size will also mean more thrums, which will create a denser roving layer within the mitten. When the thrums start to felt, they will feel less individually scraggly and should felt together more easily.
  • The cuffs should be longer because the roving near the opening of the mitten will distort the top of the cuff.
