Notes

In lieu of buttons I used the eye instructions from Fuzzy Polar Bear Hat and black yarn. I also used the black for the nose and mouth.

To size this hat for a 2-year-old I added one more round of increases (2 HDC in 1st stitch, 1 HDC in next 5 stitches, repeat around) to bring the total stitch count in round 7 to 56 stitches. I also added two more rounds of working even in HDC bringing the total row count prior to beginning the ear flaps to 15. For the ear flaps I started with 10 stitches and worked the decreases as per the pattern with 21 stitches on the front of the hat between the ear flaps. It looked a little off when I had the ear flaps finished so I added a row of HDC on the diagonal along the front edge of each ear flap to make them a little wider and shorten the gap between the flaps on the front of the hat. If I were to make another hat in this size I would probably start the ear flaps with 12 stitches and place them 1 or 2 stitches closer together. I made the ears according to the pattern but added one more round of increases to the muzzle as follows: Rnd 4: 2 HDC in 1st stitch, 1 HDC in next 4 stitches, repeat around. (24 sts)

Since the resizing that I employed to make this into a toddler hat was essentially (let’s call it “educated”) guesswork, I was a little nervous about it, but it turned out to be a perfect fit for the 2-year-old boy who received it for his birthday. smile

I ran out of the Caron worsted weight yarn and had to use a mystery sport weight yarn doubled to finish. (Not a perfect color match, but pretty darned close. It’s not as obvious in person as it is in the pictures.) Since I don’t know what the yarn was that I used I can only estimate the yardage.
