I was really inspired by the giant sandworms from the Dune series, this particular little fellow is based on the scene from Dune: Part Two with the worm handler, and is perhaps close in scale to a medium-sized worm if you were the size of a Lego minifigure. A very specific size reference, but there it is nonetheless.

Malabrigo Arroyo in the color Sandbank was used for the body, a different Malabrigo was used to create the interior of the mouth, and embroidery floss was used to crochet each individual tooth. This worm has a cotton lining, and has a weighted core running the entire length of the body, giving him a very lifelike feel when held and posed.

Currently, Shai Hulud resides on top of my bookshelf, guarding my little stack of Dune books and a jar of melange (don’t even ask me what I paid for the intergalactic shipping).
