This scarf is made using a special-run chenille yarn commissioned by the wonderful Alex Murphy of the Stitches In Time knitting group on Facebook. (NOTE: Alex commissioned the run of the chenille, not this particular scarf.) It’s probably the closest we will ever get to the original Sirdar chenille the original DW S18 scarf was knitted from (the Sirdar has, of course, long been discontinued.) I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to use this beautiful yarn to knit a scarf for another Doctor Who fan! I’m not yet sure what to call the yarn, since it’s not commercially available, so details on it will follow.

I’ve only just started the scarf, so for now, here’s a photo of the beautiful chenille yarn. Further details will follow as knitting progresses!

UPDATE 9/20/2015: Just over 12% done. Wow, this chenille is a pain to knit with! I’ve worked with chenille before, but never one this problematic. :( Still, I’ll get it done … hopefully it will get easier.

UPDATE 12/25/2015 Had to take a break from this scarf to finish a Christmas commission, but am back working on it now, and just hit the 50% mark. I’ve since discovered that the size 9 needles I THOUGHT I was using are actually size 8s - mislabeled? Who knows! Anyway I switched to a newer pair of 8s and, knitting more tightly, it’s now going faster and more easily (although not as quickly as with regular yarn) - and, far fewer worms! I hope to finish it by mid-February. It may be going fastER, but it’s still not fast.

Also, my customer has requested that I make this an S18 Exhibition scarf rather than the standard TV S18, so it will be slightly longer than the original. Details to come!

UPDATE 3/18/2016: Knitting completed - all 17 feet of it! Now the real work begins: fixing all the worms that have popped up in my work while it sat for the last 6 months. Now I truly understand why they call them worms - they appear out of nowhere, double in size like magic, and continue to grow whenever you look away (perhaps they have something in common with the Weeping Angels). Anyway, I am about half done working out the worms; hope to be able to start the crocheted border and add the tassels within a week or so. It’s definitely going to be very, very pretty when it’s done!
