Needed a project for my European cruise, and I think I’ve found the perfect sciarpa (Italian for “scarf”) for the job. This pattern fell into my lap at just the right time - otherwise, 3 weeks would have been a looong time to go without a project!
This stitch is called the Wave Stitch, and the majority of the knitting was done on a ship on the Mediterranean Sea, or on its islands and surrounding countries. Hence, the name seemed like an obvious choice. This is one well-traveled scarf!
The pattern is very easy.and quick to memorize, being just a variation on garter stitch with some wrapping (yarn-overs) and redistribution of the slack upon dropping same. The yellow spots forming a zigzag pattern was a wonderfully serendipitous surprise! Getting the yellow to fall in JUST the right places sometimes required some frogging and re-knitting at a different tension, but otherwise, this is a very, very easy pattern that will work with almost any yarn.
I also added the lattice-type fringe, held in place with mutlicolored beads which just happen to match the scarf perfectly (pink, orange, and yellow on the 3 lattice levels, and clear beads on the ends). This fringe isn’t part of the original pattern, but I’ve seen it elsewhere a few times and had been looking for the perfect project ro use it on. Voila!
I can scarcely express how thrilled I am with how this scarf turned out.
Sorry for the extensive collection of photos, but (1) I wanted to ensure you could see all the detail, and (2) I tend to post a lot of pics anyway.
Note: the last photo shows one of the two projects I decided NOT to make with this yarn. I originally bought it for my Seeds of Doom hat (see ‘Hat and Scarf of Doom’ on my projects page), but it just didn’t quite work.
