Notes

After looking for a sc chevron pattern, I noticed that two versions I found had errors. So, I am trying to come up with a version that works. I’m doing it like the one linked here, but using 10 scs instead of 13:

https://daisyfarmcrafts.com/single-crochet-chevron-blanke...

To get those lovely ridges, work all the sts in the back loops.

Chain multiple of 23 (represents one “mountain”) + 3.
Row 1: Sc2tog over 2nd and 3rd chains from hook.
Sc in next 10 sts (going uphill).
3 sc in next st (peak).
Sc in next 10 sts (going downhill).
Skip next 2 sts (valley).
Sc in next 10 sts (back uphill).
3 sc in next st (peak).
…and so on
keep up with this until you get to the last 12 “downhill” sts.
Sc in next 10 sts.
Sc2tog in last 2 sts.
Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2 (and all rows that follow):
Sc2tog over first 2 sts.
Sc in next 10 sts (uphill).
3 scs in next st (peak).
Sc in next 10 sts (downhill).
Skip next 2 sts (valley).
Sc in next 10 sts (uphill).
And so on, until you get to those last 12 downhill sts (sc in 10 of them, then sc2tog in the last 2).

PLAN: I want the afghan to be about 60” wide and about 75” tall. One repeat (one mountain) is 5.25” wide in my swatch using I hook. Do 11 repeats, and will add some width at the end with the edging. For beginning chain, chain 256 (23x11 + 3).

The first 4 rows were about 1.5” tall. I’ll need about 200 rows to get to 75”. For each repeat, do 4 rows of brown, 2 rows each of colors 1-4 (yellow, dark yellow, orange, dark orange). So need 1/3 of total yarn as brown, and 1/6 of total yarn in each other color.

The first 4 rows (including the starting chain) weighed 49 grams, using the Hobby Lobby “I love this yarn”. An entire skein is 199 grams and 355 yards, so 49 grams translates to about 87.4 yards. So for one row, this would be about 21.8 yards. Again, this is an overestimate, since it included the starting chain. I think an estimate of 20 yards per row would be safe. For 200 total rows, this is 4000 total yards. I need 1/3 of that to be brown, and 1/6 each other color. Get 1333 yards of brown, and 667 yards for each other color. Plan for a little extra brown for an edging at the end.

I’ll need at least 4 skeins of brown (HL yarn), and 2 skein of each other color.

AFTER FINISHING: 4 skeins of brown and 2 each for the other colors was perfect. I did 184 rows. For the edging, I went around the whole bit twice — first with sc around (1 sc per row on the sides VERY LOOSELY), and second round with hdc on the edges. I kept in pattern for the top and bottom ripple edges. Also, I worked through both loops for the edging.
