This was a fun experimental project!
I used a 23-thread inkle pattern that I created using this app https://www.raktres.net/seizenn/#/
10/2 cotton in black, pink, and white warp.
10/2 cotton black weft.
3/16 heat-shrink tubing and heat gun.
5 yard warp.
Glimakra band loom, woven using a Vavstuga band knife to beat (tap) in the weft.
This was my first real attempt at band weaving, not counting that unfortunate Saturday inkle workshop I took 10 years ago. First, I tried to tablet weave shoelaces. This was disappointing when I discovered that the pattern did not look good on both sides. So, then I tried using a rigid heddle on my Seidel tablet loom. This worked well, but resulted in a band that was too wide for shoelaces and it was difficult to get the band width consistent.
But these samples gave me an idea of how many threads to use and how much take-up length the band would need.
I wanted 56” finished size, including the aglets, to fit my Converse tennis shoes.
I wound a 5 yard warp on my warping mill. I beamed the band loom using these instructions.
The main challenge was getting the tension equal at each advancement, and beating the weft in to create consistent stripes. I was moderately successful. But I think the shoelaces still look great!
My initial calculations of warp width was good. 23 ends is the perfect size for shoelaces, when woven on the band loom that gets amazing tension. (23 ends was too wide when woven with the rigid heddle or tablet loom). 5 yards was too long. I got 2 laces at 56” each, and had 48” woven band leftover. Four yards would be better.
The Aglet was interesting. I wrapped 10/2 cotton tightly around the last inch of each end, creating a wrapped tube. Although uneven, this tube fit easily inside the 3/16 tubing, and the heat gun shrank the tubing tight. I didn’t use glue, because my experiments showed the glue turned brown in the heat. So, I’ll find out if this method will create a lasting Aglet.
On subsequent laces, I finished the ends with heat shrink tubing and a heat gun. I then put a spot of glue on the shrunken tubing and crimped an angler around the lace.
4x 23mm aglets work perfectly.
Now I’ll wear these to see how well they hold up. Update: two years later and these are still going strong. They look as good as new.
Also try 18 threads of 8/2 cotton woven in a spiral.
