Co 37 instead of 27. I have smaller needles, plus I want a wide brim.
Did some gauge calculations after the first 18 rounds. I have to add 40% extra rows.
So instead of 18r for the start back I will make 24, keeping it on the low end to avoid a too loose hat.

For earflaps, there are 9 repeats, i.e. 18 rounds for increase, straight, and decrease. So I will do 12 repeats / 24r here too, instead.

When I had knit to half of the first ear flap I measured against my Maailman Synty hat which is on the larger side. I think I have to make this hat a bit smaller.
So I ripped back to the increase rounds and will do 11 repeats instead of 12 all over the earflap.

Knit some more and realized there will not be enough of the blueish gray for the brim with my mods. Also, I don’t need to add as much to it as I thought. Maybe just 20 rows / 10 riller extra. And finally , I read the pattern wrong and did the earflaps too wide.
So I need a new plan. I really want the brim in the dark color.

I measured my gauge on the part I already knit: 18st, 40r on 10x10cm. The pattern requires 20st, 36r
So it should be OK to co 27 like the pattern says. But should I make it longer?

I started over with 27st. Plan for lengthening:
- 2r/1 repeat in start back
- 2r/1 repeat on flat part of each earflap
- 6r/3 repeats in front

Finished the hat, but the crown is the wrong length - either too short or too long :-) I will redo the center part of the crown with short rows so that the front is higher than the back.

I ended up just ripping back the crown a bit and finished according to the pattern.
