I am following her suggestion (and that of several others who have made this) to make it wider and longer. I have also started with the back and a provisional cast-on. Hopefully I will be able to join the front to it to work this in one piece.
I toyed with the idea of changing the cable to a braided cable, but decided to stay with the horseshoe.
Starting back first with a provisional cast on so I will not have to seam the front and back. Using size 8 CO 77 st instead of 71. Sl 1 st of every row purl wise and knit last st of every row. Added 3 sts before 1st cable and after last cable.
after 14 cables, measures @ 20” over the 3x3 rib & @ 19 1/2” over the cable non-stretched; will probably make the back about 20 cables long
knit to pattern row 6 of 19th cable group w/size 8 then switched to size 9 circ for row 7 and purled 38th & 39th sts tog to set up for 3 needle BO for hood.
front: used size 8 circ to pu provisional CO starting with WS facing & k row 2 of front as a base row: sl1, p3, k2, p2, k2 (p2, p2tog, p2, p2tog, p2, 2ptog, p3, k2, p8, k2) times 2, p3, k1
dec 6sts - front is knit on 70 sts instaed of 64 maintaining 3 sts before 1st cable and after last cable
for 3x3 riib start w/p3 so that the end rib matches when flap is turned down.
at st 36, k2tog
note: should have BO after an odd row
buttonband: bet the markers there are @224 rows (14 cables x 8 rows x 2 front & back) less 1/3 st (@74) = 150 sts to pu but because I sl 1st st of evrey row, I have 112 chains (56x2) plus 1 extra for join = 113 ch per side, so for every 3 ch I pu a st = 150 st
starting band w/p3 so it will apper as k3 on RS
row didn’t end w/p3 so frogged band to add 2 more sts (152) 1 extra at join & 1 extra at front edge
starting button hole at 4th row, they’re 3 sts ea w/13 sts bet for a total of 5 buttons per side
working 1 row buttonhole for 1st time ( it wasn’t so easy to do; I might try tulip button hole sometime)
I like pompoms, but think they fall apart after time, so I made a crochet pompom for the hood w an h hook
pattern is in Super Finishing Techniques for Crochet book by Betty Barnden but it isn’t in Ravelry
it’s interestingly cute but smallish
I added a row of sc around the edge of the hood
I’m calling in finished even though I haven’t added buttons yet
