„Rote Funken“ is a carnival guard in Köln, Germany. The origin of the guard are the city soldiers in red and white uniforms. These soldiers were poorly paid and they knitted socks to make some extra money. To remember this, the first company of the „Rote Funken“ is is named „Streckstrump“, that means „knitted stocking“ and their sign is a red and white sock with needles.
