When asked about this project-- “What are you knitting?” -- I wish I had a straightforward answer. The person asking is usually just trying to make pleasant conversation not get into a heavy discussion about garment construction! Part of the charm of this piece is its inability to be pigeonholed, how original it looks when worn, the craftiness of its construction. What I don’t like is how difficult it is to know if it will fit well as you your are working the fabric. You must trust the designer and do some swatching before you begin.
This is my second Enveloppe and probably not my last. I already have a request from a friend.
A couple of things worth remembering - always s1 purlwise wyif - even for the closing short row section for the front of the piece (where my tendency is to slip with yarn in back but that leaves holes when you BO in the next row) .
Currently having some difficulty with slipping needles through backs of the stitches for the armpiece. I asked for some advice from a friend which reassured me that my approach was reasonable. They are easier to pick up on the back than on the front (or was it the other was around - I have already forgotten) and this must be because of the difference in construction. I used separate needles for the picked up stitches rather than the circular I was knitting with as i remembered it being awkward with my first project.
Mods - I added 3 additional rows for the armpiece before binding off.
I struggled with the wording in the pattern for the seams; in the end proceeded with a standard approach to seaming and perhaps that was all that was intended afterall.
I came across the yarn travelling in Ireland this summer and started knitting up my second Enveloppe on the plane journey back to Toronto after winding up the skein by hand in my hotel the night before.
