Notes

This project was inspired by the Coronavirus bracelet project for kids on the CSIRO Double Helix website. I figured, why use beads? I can knit that!

I am knitting one of the nucleotide genetic sequences for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. You can find several of these at the NCBI GenBank website. I’ve assigned each of G, A, T, and C to a colour:

G = green
A = aqua (really, blue)
T = tangerine
C = canary

You can use any colours, but I wanted to make them mnemonic so I didn’t have to keep looking up which was which letter.

I’m knitting this in the round on a small circular needle. For each appearance of a letter, I’m knitting a single round in the appropriate colour and carrying the unused colours up the inside of the tube.

The genetic sequence is SUPER LONG, so I will definitely only be doing a portion of it!
