Cast on 96 sts loosely with lon-tail cast on.
3 rows 1x1 rib
Cable: 8 row alternating columns cable, over eight stitch repeat

Mark start of round with stitch marker.
R1-3: k4, p1, k2, p1 repeat , to end
R4: 2 sts on CN hold to front. K2sts, then 2 sts from CN. P1, k2, p1, k4, p1, k2, p1 repeat , to end
R5-7: as rows 1-3
R8: k4, p1, k2, p1, 2 sts on CN hold to front. K2sts, then 2 sts from CN, p1, k2, p1 repeat , to end of round.

These eight rows make up pattern.
Repeat until cowl is desired length, ending with R3 or R7.
3 rows 1x1 rib
Sewn bind off.
