DISSERTATION PROPOSAL
Name: xnera
Team: Ninja Warrior
Craft: Crochet
Summary of Project: I propose to crochet a long-sleeved sweater in a shell-stitch pattern.
Pattern: Tall Latte by Doris Chan
Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-ease, 10 skeins for the main color and 1 skein for contrasting color.
Swatch: The gauge is 2 pattern repeats and 6 rows equals 3 inches. I tried using the recommended I hook and was too small. Going up to a J hook gave me perfect gauge.
Category: Encyclopedia: Volume C for Chocolate. The color of my yarn reminds me of chocolate.
Chocolate dates back to 1100 BC, when the Mayans and Aztecs made chocolate drinks known as xocolātl. Chocolate comes from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree. After fermentation, the beans are dried, then cleaned, and then roasted, and the shell is removed to produce cacao nibs. The nibs are then ground to cocoa mass, pure chocolate in rough form. Because this cocoa mass usually is liquefied then molded with or without other ingredients, it is called chocolate liquor. The liquor also may be processed into two components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter. Unsweetened baking chocolate (bitter chocolate) contains primarily cocoa solids and cocoa butter in varying proportions. Much of the chocolate consumed today is in the form of sweet chocolate, a combination of cocoa solids, cocoa butter or other fat, and sugar. Milk chocolate is sweet chocolate that additionally contains milk powder or condensed milk. White chocolate contains cocoa butter, sugar, and milk but no cocoa solids.
Time Justification: On the one hand, I’m unemployed, which means I have plenty of free time. On the other hand, I’m currently fighting depression which inhibits my ability to crochet for long periods of time. I also plan on completing the other challenges. Given my current daily activity, I expect this project to take me three months.
Team Tie-In: Team Browncoats. My yarn is the same color as the shirt that Malcolm Reynolds wears.
OMG MY FIRST GARMENT!!!
Note to self: Using the U-nitt J hook.
- 03/11/09: Starting over. Boo, hiss. This might be my first garment, but I can tell when things aren’t working right. I’m not even done with the yoke yet and it just… doesn’t make any sense at how this could possibly work as a sweater. Not frogging progress so far; just starting with another skein and seeing if that looks better.
