2011-04-10 Now that it’s blocked, the fabric is a lot flatter. There is a bit of a ripple in the fabric, but it doesn’t draw in nearly as much.

2011-04-08 This is an intriguing fabric when unblocked, the surface looks like a bunch of pinwheels separated by pinwheel-shaped depressions (which stand out in relief on the other side). It’s a very symmetrical fabric that’s also reversible. Interesting, very interesting… and it’s created entirely by knits and purls. Well, knits and purls in an entrelac fabric, which makes the final result impossible for me to predict.

I need to start another sample, perhaps I can call it a baby blanket or something. I tried to knit this in acrylic, and it was so hard fighting the non-stretchy quality. I went back to this wool I had lying around, and the wool is great, but I don’t have enough to make a proper sample and the yarn has abraded too much from being carried around in my backpack. Some of the strands are worn thin and break as I’m pulling loops through for the entrelac join. Argh!

2011-04-03 On this chart, black represents purls (reverse-stockinette) and white represents knits (stockinette). Blue lines show the boundary of each square. Each entrelac square is half white, half black.

The join between squares always joins purl to knit. This makes the join flat, so this fabric should have the least relief of any entrelac fabric.

So far I’ve knitted the base triangles and one row of squares and have started on the second row. The interesting part of this fabric will be in the grain. Right now it’s looking pretty cool, it’s like diamond shapes made of the knitting grain. The fabric curls. I’ll get a picture up soon.
