Spinning, dyeing, felting, knitting, weaving, and sewing are verbs to describe how communities have created cloth, garments, and other fiber-based goods. Such acts embody connection and creativity. And such objects provide shelter and keep us warm. A Verb for Keeping Warm honors these traditions by offering a wide range of raw materials to create textiles, such as fiber, yarn, and fabric, along with classes to cultivate the skill and practice of creating your own clothing and home goods.

Located at 6328 San Pablo Ave, our Oakland brick-and-mortar houses a store, an indoor and outdoor classroom, an indoor and outdoor natural dyeing studio, where we produce our own line of naturally dyed yarn and fabric, and a natural dyeing garden. The garden is used to educate local school children, customers, and aspiring dye gardeners about which types of plants make dye. At Verb, you can find batches of yarn dyed with these plants.

To learn more about our process within the dye studio, you can follow our Instagram account. In 2015, Kristine published her first book, The Modern Natural Dyer. In this book, you too can learn and practice the art of natural dyeing. In 2020, co-owners, Kristine and Adrienne released Journeys in Natural Dyeing.

Kristine, the co-owner of Verb, loves everything from spinning her own yarn to sewing her own clothing. The shop reflects this love, and is divided into three sections: yarn, fabric, and fiber.

At Verb, you have the possibility to choose your fabric for a new dress, and your yarn, for the accompanying cardigan. We carry fiber, yarn, and fabric considered the best in the industry and have especially warm feelings towards fiber, yarn, and fabric made in the US from US raised wool and cotton.

At Verb, you will find yarn and fabric in every color imaginable. Come by to touch and see all of the colors and textures in person.

Our indoor classroom is used for teaching knitting, spinning, sewing, quilting and weaving. Our outdoor classroom, nestled within Verb’s natural dye garden, is where we teach natural dyeing. You can take classes from teachers around the world who teach a wide variety of textile centered skills.

Making together by hand, creates a space to get to know others interested in textiles, and to be inspired by one another. By taking classes at Verb, you will have a solid foundation of technique, in combination with inspiration, so you can create your own body of work and develop your own textile-focused practice.
