Knitting: Tee
Blakeslee is a top-down tee in a light fingering-weight yarn, worked top-down with raglan increases, and short sleeves picked up and knitted seamlessly. Alternate rounds are worked as knit and slip one/knit one, creating a heathered stripe effect that looks deceptively complicated for how simple it is to work.

Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
Antonia is a lacy yet hearty shawl inspired by the open skies and wide grasslands of Willa Cather’s classic 1918 novel My Antonia. Its scalloped edges evoke a past era of American life, while the center-slanted lace motifs of its main body are faintly reminiscent of the Germanic or Bohemian influence carried over from the Old Country by familie...

Knitting: Fingerless Gloves, Beanie, Toque
Gerda is a matching hat-and-mitt set, executed in warming colorwork and dedicated to the loyal Hans Christian Andersen heroine who succeeds in saving her best friend from a lifetime of frozen, heartless cynicism in the palace of The Snow Queen. (Fittingly enough, the name of the Gerda set was suggested by a friend of mine: Homero Luna of Splend...

Julia is a striking twisted-stitch sock pattern named for the glamorously androgynous Julia Standing, a character in Sarah Waters’s 2006 novel The Night Watch. Like Julia herself, making her way through London in and around the Second World War, these socks are handsomely understated, yet somehow sexy: capable of being worn with distinction by ...

Times when, despite the sunny weather, a wearer might feel a bit chilly in the evening, or want to spice up her look with a bit of vintage charm. Or times when, to take another example, a wearer has just returned from a Hawaiian vacation, and suddenly the sixty-degree weather in ...

Knitting: Cardigan
This is pattern is a tribute to my paternal grandmother, a fantastic lady with whom I was very close as a child, and who I still miss. To read more about her, and about the sweater I designed in her honor, check out the pattern page.

Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
This is a pattern I developed for my Family Trunk Project series. It’s based on my great-grandfather, Paul Atwell, a Kentucky farm boy who moved to California and worked in the Navy shipyards. It’s a simple stitch pattern with a few graceful details, sized for men or women. For more on the man or the socks, check out the pattern page.

Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This pattern is inspired by my great-grandmother, Jessie Lambdin, an Indiana farm girl who went out west, got married and ended up in 1920’s Hawaii. For more information on the woman and the pattern, check out the pattern page on the Family Trunk Project site. You can buy it here or there!
