You can use any yarn that you like. I use cotton yarns for baby blankets but this also makes a lovely lap blanket for the winter when made of wool or another heavier yarn.

This is a simple washcloth pattern. It is a basic seed stitch and holds up to even the most vigorous pot scrubbing.

This is a multisized crocheted blanket. The hook used should be compatible with the yarn selected, or one size bigger/smaller to obtain a gauge that is warm and comfortable.
