there is something so magical about standing near a volcano. tall rock formations that seem so sturdy, yet are bubbling just underneath the surface with potential. you never know when they might just reach the boiling over point. they are a stark reminder to the simultaneous patience and power that mother earth can hold. luckily, you won’t need...

fjords are like chasms ripping deep into the earth, filled with dark waters and hidden depths. if you place your face in one and look down, you can’t see the bottom, which is somehow both claustrophobic and indicative of too much space to fathom. it’s hard to tear your eyes away from the shifting shades of blue as you look deeper and deeper tho...

iceland is a land surrounded by water and filled with it in all its forms - raging, quiet, scalding, frozen, pouring. waterfalls, both great and small, can be found dotted around the entire country. these boot cuffs have a waving lace evocative of the falling streams, rivers, and glacial melts. yoth’s fresh palette will let you choose what kind...

is there anything more breathtaking than watching a wild horse gallop through fields? perhaps if that gallop was through a lava field. iceland is known for its population of wild horses, which are actually closer to pony-sized and are also not technically wild, although they spend summer months grazing freely. this lightweight stole has the abi...

iceland’s national flower is a delicate-looking white blossom. any flower that can grow above the treeline and in such harsh temperatures is hardier than it appears though. just like this cropped sweater - seemingly sweet and simple, but well-wearing in a trusty yarn like yoth’s big sister. make this pattern in multiple colours and you’ll have ...

lava is perhaps one of the most terrifying by-products of earth’s existence - molten hot rock spewing from the core of the planet and out onto the ground we walk on. these wristwarmers (or handshoes, as i affectionately refer to them) are not nearly so devastating. thanks to the mirroring lace, they look just as good on smaller hands as they do...

a by-product of being a land of lava and ice is that iceland is full of natural hot springs. some are wilder than others, and some are literally too hot to handle. but the ones that you can slip into are a delicious way to relax your sore muscles and unwind from all that hiking and adventuring. this sweater is also delicious to slip into, and y...

glaciers can look like giant blankets, draped across the tops of mountains and down into valleys. when they break off and calve, the sound is like a thunderclap, with the now relatively small icebergs floating away into the rivers they feed. this crop top may not seem like the ideal layer for wearing at the base of a giant piece of ice, but res...

there are over 700 types of lichen found in iceland. well over half of the identified species are part of the crustose category, meaning that they resemble a crust on top of the materials they grow on. this layer of growing life can be subtle in its appearance, but it is an important part of the local ecosystems. these socks have a similarly su...

there are almost 50,000 species of moss that grow in iceland. ironically, there is also a lichen named “iceland moss” which is used as an herbal supplement for everything from colds to tuberculosis and as a poultice for skin ailments. this hat uses the appropriately named “moss stitch” to mimic the texture of these low-lying vegetations. knit t...

Knitting: Convertible Gloves
in the forest, there are many ways to get your paws dirty. you have to walk through the mud, decaying foliage, rain puddles, and sometimes even bogs. the winter may be cleaner, but it is also colder. it is essential to have toasty paws, no matter how dirty your fur may get. these flip-top mittens allow you to keep your own paws cozy, while also...

fact: a fault line is a crack in the earth’s surface. it occurs where seismic shifts have happened. fact: cracks are how the light gets in. so, following my childhood logic, a fault line is how the earth’s heart gets its light. and following that childhood logic further, we could all benefit from a couple of fault lines letting light into our o...
Knitting: Vest
trees are clever creatures and have many layers, including outer bark. let this vest be one of your outer layers. linen or wool, it is sure to warm your heartwood.

animals have multiple layers of different types of hair in their coats. the exterior hairs are called guard hairs, and they do just that. they are tough and ready to protect the rest of the body from the elements. this crop top, which can be worn with the long hem in the front or back, is not quite so tough. but it is an extra layer of warmth o...
Knitting: Cape
when foraging in the woods, it is better to have more layers than fewer, especially if one of those layers includes a hood. this hooded cape is knit from the bottom-up with short row increases, resulting in a body that can fastened around the neck like a shawl. the hood is edged with moon-shaped cables, perfectly appropriate for a lunar lover. ...

the undertow can sweep you away, but you can’t see it until you’re caught inside its grasp. these boot cuffs are less dangerous than that, but the lace stitch gently suggests the currents underneath the surface, and draw attention down to the perfect pair of boots.

costae is the latin word for ribs, which i love. they’re magnificent bones with an impressive amount of flexibility, as well as a stunning delicacy. this shawl gives a nod to that simple grace, and is also a perfect way to showcase gorgeous gradient yarns. when it comes to your rib rows, worry less about specific stitch counts and just go with ...

deconstruction began as an experiment in natural dyeing and eco-printing. what would happen if i dyed and eco-printed a pre-knit sock blank, unravelled it, and knit it into something new? what could i design that would show off the sprinkling of colours from leaves and bark and petals and compost? a simple stockinette diamond begins at one corn...

deer heart is the result of a friend’s request, a lot of trial and error, and an affinity for lace. the double-sided lace stitch could be deer antlers or could be a heart. and so much heart was involved in this one. knit one for your own dear heart and one for a lover’s heart too.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
every wolf needs a pair of cozy paws. úlfur is the icelandic word for wolf, which is exactly what these cuffs remind me of. they are the littermate pattern for the úlfur hat, which also features short rows and chevron stitch.

i am definitely someone with a northern sensibility. i prefer the cold, i like big open spaces without too many humans, and i love layers upon layers of clothing. so it’s no surprise that iceland is my favourite place to visit. when i went camping on the edge of reykjavik a few years ago, i climbed waterfalls and dormant volcanoes, baa-ed with ...

welcome to the wonderground evokes images of mad tea parties, carnivals, ocean visits, and riding the ferris wheel all the way to the top. easy lace and short rows keep it interesting while remaining basic enough for social knitting. it has oodles of colour possibilities, and would be interesting even if it was monochromatic. it would also be a...

the gift of warmth is a comfort we creatures all seek at one time or another. creature comforts began as a gift for my auntie. in the search for a simple, quick hat that was comfortable and could help ward off the chill while not being too hot for wearing indoors, i settled on a garter stitch edge and a stockinette body. knit in sportweight yar...

prairie fire is the english name for the latin castilleja coccinea. it’s a gorgeous, fiery flower that can be found across the prairies, out west, and down as far south as the andes with certain strains of the castilleja plant. i have many memories as a wee one stumbling on patches of them on hikes while camping. loopy cross stitches in manos d...

pollination was born as an idea while i lived on a communal farm in rural nova scotia, canada during an art residency. it was the best experience of my life thus far, and the most nurturing and creative environment i’ve ever encountered. i wound the first skein of wool by hand during one of our fire circles, and researched stitches under the ro...
