The 30% Tencel gives this yarn a little bit of sheen as well as the strength for socks! Tencel is a product of wood pulp from cultivated southern oak and gum trees that are grown on land unsuitable for grazing. The wood pulp is processed in a closed-loop system (meaning chemicals are recycled and there is very little waste) which is more environmentally friendly than viscose-rayon processing.

The base for this yarn is made by Green Mountain Spinnery, a mill in Putney, Vermont. The company is an employee-owned cooperative that is commited to sustaining regional sheep farming and environmentally friendly milling practices. They also do not practice carbonization, so you may find the occasional piece of clean grass or hay in the yarn.
