Hand dyed British Poll Dorset breed sport weight wool from The Kennixton Flock; an award-winning flock of 25 sheep living the dream in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.

Please be aware that this yarn comes from a tiny flock, which produce a very limited quantity of wool each year. Once the current round of dyelots are gone (we have nine now, and a handful more for Edinburgh Yarn Festival), there will be no more until the sheep have been clipped and their wool sent for spinning this summer.

This yarn is a lovely breed-specific wool, which feels woolly and a little coarse in the skein, however once knitted/crocheted up it is next-to-skin soft enough for many people we think - it’s not itchy in the way that a hairy yarn is. It reminds us of Shetland wool, but not quite as soft. It’s an absolute joy to work with; it creates a really light but warm and woolly fabric thanks to being woollen spun. It’s great for things like hats and fingerless mitts, especially with colourwork, and I think it’d make lovely garments for those who can wear it next to skin or who will wear it with a long-sleeved top underneath.

Although originally labelled as a 4ply yarn, thanks to the natural bulk from the lovely loose spin and fuzzy fibre, it works out as a sport weight yarn in terms of yardage, and knits up as a light DK (I’m finding 3.5-4mm needles best). It’s woolly, bouncy, light, and warm.

As with all hand dyed yarns, I would recommend that you use two skeins at a time, alternating from each one every couple of rows/rounds (unless it’s a one-skein project).
