Reno Rafter 7
Reno Rafter 7 is Jimmy Beans Wool’s first ever truly local yarn! Made with wool from Rafter 7 sheep raised by the University of Nevada, Reno; spun into yarn by Mountain Meadow Wool; dyed by hand at Madelinetosh; and for sale exclusively at Jimmy Beans Wool!
The Rafter 7 breed of sheep was developed in the 1990s by the University of Nevada, Reno College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources at the department’s Experiment Station, under the direction of Dr. Hudson Glimp. Now they are raised at the Great Basin Research & Extension Center in Eureka, NV. Rafter 7 sheep are well-adapted to the harsh Great Basin environment and produce some of the finest wool in the nation. We are proud and excited to launch this yarn at Jimmy Beans!
The Great Basin Research & Extension Center ranch is run as a research facility, empowering students and professors to experiment with common challenges faced by ranchers the world over, including desertification, salinization, soil nutrient depletion,
poor water quality, invasive species, declining biodiversity and soil erosion. By partnering with the ranching community around the state, the Great Basin Research & Extension Center will address the challenges of herd genetics and management, water
conservation in cropping, and range restoration.
