About the Name
The nephew of King Mark, Tristan fell madly in love with Mark’s wife, Isolde. This love triangle is quite similar to the Lancelot-Guenevere-Arthur love triangle. In the end, Tristan is mortally wounded (poison) in a fight and longs to see Isolde one last time (he also believes that she can heal his wound). He sends a ship to fetch Isolde; if she is indeed on board the ship upon its return, the sails are supposed to be white; if she is not on board, the sails are to be black. Because he is bedridden, he has to ask his wife (who is incredibly jealous) what color the sails are. She lies and says they are black. Tristan, thinking Isolde has forsaken him, dies; when Isolde finds out Tristan has died, she too dies, of a broken heart. They are buried side by side and the vine and rose growing out of each of their graves intertwine, joining them in death.
