Gulf Coast Native were once a feral sheep, ubiquitous in the Southeast. They are descendants of the earliest sheep brought to the US by Spanish and French explorers. Later, when Virginia settlers migrated south, these ‘natives’ were crossed with traditional British breeds.

GCN are hardy, acclimated to heat and humidity. They can forage in woods as well as pasture, and they’re unfussy, but good, mothers. Because of their large genetic pool, the sheep often vary in appearance and color, their fleeces in thickness and fiber length. When selected and bred for fiber, they provide a creamy, lustrous fleece, with a reasonably soft hand.
