The Brown/Burgundy Sample was knit with MC: 275 yards of handspun 2-ply aran weight yarn from Spinderella’s Thrums (unique composition for each batch), 9 wpi and CC: 40 yards (less than 1 skein) of Cascade Ecological Wool (100% wool) in ‘Burgundy’ on 7mm (approx. US 10.75) needles to a gauge of 9 stitches and 17 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette after blocking and a finished size of 64 inches (162 cm) across the top, and 32 inches (81 cm) from neck to bottom point.

This shawl is the epitome of easy knitting, with top-down construction and simple eyelet rows. Worked in a heavyweight yarn, it’s perfect for sitting fireside with your knitting or as an extra layer with a sweater.

This shawl is worked from the neck down, using yarn overs on each end of each right side row to shape the “wings” and paired yarn overs in the center of each right side row (separated by a center stitch) to shape the point down the spine. These four increased stitches are added every right side row, making each row successively longer than the last, so that what started with five stitches cast on ends with substantially more.

Finish working the main color with any full row, and then work the finishing row and bind off with the contrasting color. This shawl can be worked in any weight and any amount of yarn, although needle size should be adjusted appropriately.
