INTRO

Contour is a bold cardigan design featuring smooth curves and dramatic angles. The vivid shapes are created by several sections of German short rows, and the hem, collar and cuffs accentuate the shapes with a two-color brioche stitch.

Worked seamlessly and top-down, Contour is deceptively straightforward to knit. Raglan increases build up the yoke to the first section of short rows, which shapes the upper back to give height to the neck of the cardigan. After the separation of the sleeves, the body is worked even up to the bottom back and side short rows, where the fun shapes are born. After all the bottom short rows are complete, a brioche hem is worked in two sections. The arms are worked similarly to the sides with triangular short row shapes at the wrists. While the German short rows are ample, they help construct the beautifully smooth contours of this eccentric cardigan.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Contour includes a total of thirteen sections of German short rows, including some within the brioche hem and shawl collar. However, only basic two-color brioche stitches are used.

SIZING

All of my patterns are #sizeinclusive.

Finished chest circumference:
32 (35, 39, 43, 47) (51, 56, 60, 63) inches /
81 (89, 99, 109, 119) (129.5, 142, 152, 160) cm

Contour is intended to fit somewhat oversized with a positive ease of 0-3 inches in the chest. Size down for a more fitted garment that can be worn closed. Cardigan fits broadly across the back of the shoulders. For larger chest measurements with smaller frames, I recommend sizing down. A sizing schematic is provided in the pattern.

There are instructions within the pattern for knitting a shorter or longer cardigan. Samples shown are knit 1 inch longer in the body and sleeves to meet my preferences. For reference, the samples are Size Small, and my measurements are as follows: Height: 5’7”; Bust: 35”

Sizing is based on the measurements provided in the Women’s Size Chart on the Craft Yarn Counil website. If your size falls within the upper range for that size, you will have less ease. If it falls within the lower range, you will have greater ease.
