With the exception of the four years I spent in San Francisco, I’ve lived my entire life in climates with long winters and distinct - but all-too-distant springs. Growing up near Chicago, those first few days of leaving the house with only a light jacket were cause for celebration.

In Canada too, it seems that the closer we get to actual spring-like weather, the more in denial we can be about weather-appropriate clothing. That first day of temperatures above freezing makes me want to break out my pastels, my sandals, and clothing that hasn’t seen daylight for six months.

When the weather refuses to cooperate with your Springish dreams, make sure you keep your head a little warmer - and more seasonally appropriate - with this hopeful beret.

This beret is knit in a spiral, with each round shifted one st to the left. For this reason, it is necessary to shift the st marker at the end of every round. When shaping the crown, each round begins with a yarn over followed by a decrease, and ends by knitting into the first yarnover of the round below. It may sound complicated, but it’s easier than you might think and insanely logical.
