My son squeals with delight every time he sees or hears a bus. I decided he MUST have a school bus sweater. Next thing I knew, I was busting out the colored pencils and browsing the internet for cheerfully-colored yarn. When I read that Knit Picks colorway “Canary will remind you of sunflowers and school buses,” I decided it was fate: Sam Gus’ School Bus sweater must be knit!

Sam Gus’ School Bus knit in a cotton blend makes a perfect fall sweater for a special toddler. (Here in Texas, it serves as a perfect winter sweater, too!) For those tikes living is places with real winter, Sam Gus’ School Bus would be toasty and perfect in a DK-weight wool.

The front and back are worked separately. The sleeves are worked in the round down to the cuff from stitches picked up from the armhole edges. The pattern includes written instructions and a chart for the school bus motif.

The pattern requires basic and intermediate knitting techniques: knit, purl, cast on, bind off, decreases (k2tog, p2tog, ssk, p2togtbl), yarn over, intarsia, reading charts, picking up stitches, 3-needle bind-off, knitting in the round (optional), simple embroidery (chain stitch and duplicate stitch), mattress stitch seaming.
