An elegant, graceful shawl, knit in the round from the center out. The square design features cables and simple lace motifs, and can also be knit at a heavier gauge to create a beautiful throw or baby blanket.

As written, the square version takes 1 whole skein of Westerly Sea Sock (only a few yards remained at the end) in the main color and approximately half to 2/3 of a skein of the contrasting color. Exact yardage may vary; you may need a second skein of the main color, but one skein of the contrasting color will be more than sufficient.

Pattern is both charted and written.

Instructions for converting to a triangular shawl are also included.

Several knitters have found that starting by using Magic Loop (and skipping the dpns completely) makes the start of this shawl far easier.

Tips on getting started:

I’ll admit…the beginning of the shawl is very fiddly. I think the best way to do it is:

Cast on 4 stitches to one dpn (this will be needle 4) using a long tail cast on.

Transfer one stitch to each of three other dpns, keeping them in order (line them up, then twist them into a “circle”). I do this from the back end…so the first stitch cast on is also the first stitch transferred.

Use the needle with the “live” yarn to knit the first stitch. Basically, use needle four to knit the stitch from needle one.

Use your now empty needle one to knit the stitch on needle two.

Continue around.

When you feel comfortable (possibly after round one, maybe round two), introduce the fifth needle, so that each side of the shawl is on one needle and you’re never using the same needle for two sides.

ERRATA for original version (from Three Irish Girls): Round 4 should have 20 stitches, not 15
