Solanum is a large and diverse genus of flowering plants, including eggplant.

“Solanum” is an airy lace shawl with beautiful and intricate border. The shawl is seamless and knitted top-down from the central neck stitches to the edge. The shawl has crescent shape which is achieved by 6 stitch increases per every two rows. The shawl can be finished with a picot BO if desired. Instructions for an alternative beaded picot BO are also included in the pattern. Solanum shawl can be knitted in one color or two colors with a contrasting color accentuating the wavy shape of the lace pattern and the delicate picot BO.

Finished Size:
The sample shawls were knitted in two different sizes. The smaller (purple) sample shawl in the photographs after blocking was 168 cm (66 inches) for the straight edge on the top of the shawl and 33 cm (13 inches) for the height of the shawl at the center.
The larger (gray) sample shawl in the photographs after blocking was 200 cm (79 inches) for the straight edge on the top of the shawl and 42 cm (16.5 inches) for the height of the shawl at the center. You can easily change the shawl’s size by knitting stockinette portion of the shawl larger.

Gauge:
The gauge is not critical in knitting this shawl. Adjust your needle size to suite your yarn and achieve the size and the look of the shawl of your choice.

Yarn:
For the small (purple) sample shawl:
405.0 yards (370.3m) of ColourMart 100% Extra Fine Merino 18/58nm DK yarn was used.

For the large (gray) sample shawl:
762 yards (yarn held double) of main color and 203 yards (yarn held double) of accent color of ColourMart Cashmere 3/28NM Heavy Lace were used. If using a single strand of yarn you will need 381 yards of main color and 102 yards of accent color for a large shawl.
The DK 8-ply yarn and 2ply lace yarn held double can be substituted for a sport 5-ply or fingering 4ply weight yarn if desired.

Needles:
US 5-3.75 mm 36” (91 cm) circular needles for the shawl’s body
US 6-4.0 mm needles for a non-picot bind off.
