THIS PATTERN CAN BE DONE IN REGULAR CROCHET OR YOU CAN FELT IT. INSTRUCTIONS FOR REGULAR AND FELTED ARE INCLUDED IN THE PATTERN. You don’t have to felt it, you can simply use the smaller suggested hook size and acrylic yarn to achieve the approximate finished size.

Finished size is approximately 21” circumference and 8” in length from crown to bottom of neck (accommodation sizes are estimates only and based on average head circumferences of age range provided). The size of the mannequin head will accommodate a smaller adult hat or a older child’s hat.

Here is an affordable and creative way to make your own adult size mannequin head to display your finished hats, headbands or even wigs. Great for craft fairs, photos or just to use as a display at home.

Materials needed:
FOR FELTED VERSION: Size I/9- 5.50 MM crochet hook or hook to obtain correct gauge, medium weight 100% wool yarn.
FOR REGULAR CROCHET: Size F/5 3.75 crochet hook (or hook to obtain correct gauge) & medium weight sturdy acrylic yarn.

USE A HOOK SIZE UP IF YOU TEND TO CROCHET WITH A TIGHTER TENSION

A FIRMER type of fiberfill to stuff the head (I use one that is made to stuff firmly for dolls/bears- a crafting fiberfill, because this has more weight to it than the lighter weight, fluffier version), yarn needle, safety pin to use as a marker (you will need to use a marker for this pattern).

YOU MUST USE THE FIRM COARSE DRY TYPE OF FIBERFILL TO ACHIEVE THE INTENDED RESULTS; THE LIGHT FLUFFY KIND WILL NOT GIVE YOU A STURDY OR HEAVY ENOUGH MANNEQUIN HEAD. YOU MUST STUFF COMPLETELY FULL UNTIL IT IS VERY FIRM, OR AGAIN, YOU WON’T ACHIEVE THE INTENDED RESULTS. YOU MUST USE THE WORSTED MEDIUM WEIGHT TYPE OF YARN THAT IS STURDY, SUCH AS RED HEART SUPER SAVER YARN, OR YOU WON’T ACHIEVE THE INTENDED RESULT

Just in case you aren’t familiar with felting, here is my definition: FELTING: 100% wool that is washed and agitated vigorously to cause the wool fibers to shrink down and form a tighter weave. Read your yarn label to ensure it is 100% wool; if it is a wool blend then it won’t felt.

IDEA: Use a jet black yarn to make it interesting. I’ve even completed the felted version using brightly colored wool yarns in a stripe pattern.
