Story of Amazing Slippers
I was really and truly amazed and surprised by these slippers when I looked at them for the first time. I have thought of myself as a pretty experienced and adventurous knitter, yet I have never seen anything like them before. And I could not figure out how they were made. I asked a friend, who has shown them to me. She was very startled at my interest in such mundane objects and told me that she has no idea how they were made. Her Mom makes dozens of them each year for all of her family, friends and innocent bystanders. Since I live in Israel, and her Mom lives in a tiny village in Siberia my chances of learning anything about this wonderful footwear were almost nil.
Well, it seems that the Globe has shrank since the last time I checked, because about a couple of months ago my friend’s Mom came to stay with her after her baby was born. Lucky me! As soon as I heard about it I called my friend and made an appointment to see her Mom and learn how to make the Amazing Siberian Slippers. They turned out to be even more amazing than I could imagine. Nina, the Slipper Maker, has learned how to knit these slippers from her aunt. I was the first stranger, who has shown an interest in them.
My main difficulty was not in mastering the art of knitting these slippers, but in translating very sketchy instructions into a regular pattern that can be successfully used by all. It involved a lot of knitting, lots of ripping out, frustrated head banging and that blight of my knitting - The Math!
I have tried to lovingly preserve the traditional folk way of knitting these wonderful slippers because I think it is important. There are not many people left, who remember now how they were knit.
I hope you will come to love these pretty slippers and knit lots of them.

Pattern Overview
These slippers are very pleasant to wear, easy to knit and to customize. When the sole or the heel gets worn out they are very easy to replace, and if the slipper is outgrown it is not hard at all to make it larger.
While I am a fan of circular needles I have to admit that this pattern is easier to knit on two straight needles. But I do not have any, so circular ones worked in a pinch.
The slippers were knit with DK weight yarn. For the warmth and strength of the slippers I used it doubled for the sole and heel, or used heavy worsted weight yarn.

Materials
The yarn I used for these slippers was Swish Superwash, by Knit Picks in DK weight. It is my favorite superwash yarn. I think worsted weight would work just as well, but will make a denser slipper. I doubled the yarn for the sole on the slippers that use only two colors of yarn. On the slippers with the different color sole I used rough lama yarn in heavy worsted weight.
2 skeins of yarn in Color A (if you are using three colors, then 1 skein might be enough for the two smaller sizes)
1 skein of yarn in Color B
1 skein of yarn in Color C, if using a different color for the sole
1 size US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needle, or a pair of straight needles in size US 2 (2.75 mm)
2 stitch markers
A tapestry needle to weave in the ends

Notice, I am not giving a skill level here. This is because I do not believe in labeling skills, or people. I think these slippers can be made by an adventurous, determined beginner. As the matter of fact, Nina told me, that when she got tired of supplying her sister with countless pairs of these slippers (the sister has five kids), she taught her how to knit the slippers instead. Her sister did not knit before and these slippers are the only things she knits, but she had mastered them well and now knitting them for her kids and grand-kids.

The pattern contains 17 photos to make knitting the slippers easier. And despite looking complicated it can be knit even by a determinate beginner.

The slippers themselves are very pretty and very stretchy and will fit growing feet for a good long time. They hug the foot well and will not fall off.
