Starting with a simple rolled neckline, this easy top down sweater is knit seamlessly and in the round. A few short rows are worked to shape the shoulders and neck, then the stranded colorwork yoke is worked. There are options for straight sleeves with fitted cuff or shaped sleeves with long cuff. This design is suitable for fingering or sport weight yarn. Choose 2 or multiple colors for your yoke - charts are provided for either option. With the short chart repeats, there aren’t any overly long floats. The motifs are easy to knit and suitable for both beginners or those with plenty of colorwork experience. Arata is well suited to many types of yarn: handdyed, gradient, or your favorite millspun. There are 9 sizes for you to choose from. Please see sizing information below.

Note! The yarn I used is listed as a fingering weight but knits up at a sport gauge, even on US 4 needles. If you’d like to substitute yarns, I recommend sport weight or single ply fingering weight yarns that are commonly available from yarn dyers. Lofty, woolen spun wool fingering weight will work well too.

FIT
Arata is designed to fit with 5-8” 12.5 - 20.5 cm positive ease in the body and to have a fitted upper sleeve. There are 2 sleeve options: straight with fitted cuff, or shaped with long ribbed cuff.

GAUGE
Body: 21 sts and 30 rnds = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette st, in the round, on larger needles, after blocking. Note: You may need to go up a needle size larger than your body needle to get gauge for stranded colorwork yoke.

NEEDLES
Needle sizes are only a suggestion – swatch to determine which needles you need to use to meet gauge.

A: US 2 (2.75 mm) DPNs or 16” (40 cm) circular (neckline), matching set DPNs or long circular needle for magic loop (for straight sleeve cuff option).

B: US 3 (3.25 mm) DPNs or 32” (80 cm) long circular for magic looping long sleeve cuff, hem ribbing

C: US 4 (3.5 mm) DPNs or 32” (80 cm) long circular for body and magic looping sleeves, 40” (100 cm) or longer circular for body.
