These simple fingerless mitts, with ribbed cuffs flowing into a diamond pattern on the back of the hands, have very gentle and comfortable shaping made just by stitch pattern and needle size.

You will need:
6mm / US size 10: a set of DPNs or a pair of long circulars for Magic loop (whichever you prefer) (or adequate size to get gauge)1
4mm / US size 6: a set of DPNs (for the thumbs) (or a couple of sizes down from the ones used for the main part if different than suggested)

About 100 to 120 yards / 50 to 65 gr worsted weight yarn
Some waste yarn or stitch holders to keep the thumb stiches in suspense.
A darning needle to hide ends.

Gauge (measured in stockingette, using the bigger needles):
24 rows and 19 stitches in 4 inches or 10 cm
Skills: Knit, purl, 2 stitch cables, cast on, cast off, knitting in the round

The diamond stitch pattern is charted, both in black and white for easy printing, and in colour for at-a-glance reading, but not written out.

  1. I have been told I am too much of a thight knitter, and that others need smaller needles, like US 6 and 4, to get gauge - please check yours!
