“The Shire’’, home of the Hobbits in Tolkien’s ‘’Lord Of The Rings’’ was the inspiration for this beautiful shawl worked from the top down.

The lacy flowers represent the Hobbits’ love of all that grows, the feather and fan stitch finish stands for the smooth and gentle little hills which are characteristic for the Shire.

The rows in between the sections of blossom patterns are worked in garter stitch. The half-circle shape is achieved by increases at the beginning and end of each row and in the center section of every other row. You will need two stitch markers to mark the position of the increases in the center section.

Needed materials:

  • yarn lace-weight to fingering weight (should not be thicker than sport weight), approx. 600 - 800 meters (655
  • 874 yards)
  • circular knitting needle 3 - 4 mm (US 3 - 6)
  • stitch markers as shown in the pattern
  • sewing needle

The pattern runs 10 pages, it contains a written pattern, detailled charts and a diagram.

Skill level: easy to intermediate

Finished size after blocking approx 170x52 cm 66 x 24 in

You are free to work some troddens at the end of the shawl but as this is only an idea I will not describe how to work this in the pattern.
