I’ve discovered that one of the many magical aspects of knitting is that a single stitch pattern worked in one color looks so very different when worked in two colors. On seeing the cowl in progress, the common exclamation was: Wow! I love those textures! (It’s the same stitch throughout.)

The Barrow Street Cowl is worked from end to end, beginning with a provisional cast on and two colors and finishing with one color and grafting the ends together. The stitch pattern is easy to memorize and rhythmic to knit, using Left Twist and Right Twist to create the little frames.

If you don’t want to use a provisional cast on or graft, you can certainly cast on as usual and sew the ends together, or use a provisional cast on and a three-needle bind off.

Need to know

  • Finished width: 11”
  • Finished circumference: 50”
  • US size 5 (3.5mm) needle
  • 260 yards of sport weight yarn in Color A
  • 400 yards of sport weight yarn in Color B

Ideas to play with

  • Use a lighter or heavier weight yarn (and appropriate needle size)
  • Make a shorter cowl in just one color
  • Add a third color
  • Use a self-striping yarn as one of the colors
