This small shawl, designed to use a single 100g skein of fingering-weight yarn, features a simple knit-and-purl basketweave pattern that flows smoothly into a gently draping ribbed edge. The easy texture pattern looks good in both semisolid and more highly variegated colorways, and produces a cozier, more casual fabric than lace.

Pattern instructions are both charted and written out in full, and photos are provided to illustrate the unusual increase method suggested.

Specific instructions are included for two sizes - 55 (61) inches across the top and 16 (18) inches from upper edge to lower point, using fingering weight yarn with more or less yardage per 100g and at slightly different gauges. But the size is easily customizable, and the pattern can be adapted to use other yarn weights as well.
