This is a great pattern to use in a beginning knitting class. The hat can be finished with one skein of yarn. The design gives lots of practice with garter stitch before moving on to picking up stitches, learning to purl (for stockinette stitch), decreasing, and sewing a seam. New knitters love working with the colorful Kureyon yarn, but any aran weight yarn could be used.
