This year I would like to design and knit several shawls for some friends who have been kind to me over the years. This is the third design in the series of Shawls for Friends with more to come. Visit my Ravelry project page to see the upcoming designs in this series.
Other published designs in this series:
Queen V
Rombik
Fire Spirit

My thoughts going into this series of designs for friends are:

  1. to use the color I know they love and wear;
  2. design a shawl to complement their lifestyle and personality;
  3. make future blocking easier for them by keeping the borders easy to block, since most of them are not knitters;

I designed and knitted this shawl (the purple one in the pics) for my friend JoKaren, who is a fellow knitter I was lucky to meet some years ago through Ravelry. She is kind, wonderful person, supportive friend and has a great spirit about her. She has knitted so many things for others and I wanted to make something for her. A year ago she moved from the sunny California to cold Utah and I thought the lightweight and very warm alpaca shawl will be perfect for her. Also, unaware that this shawl was for her, she suggested the name Bougainvillea for this shawl when I asked for suggestions on my FB page. I hope she will like this surprise shawl ;-)

The yellow shawl I made for myself. It uses one strand of fingering weight merino/silk and one strand of kidsilk. For details on this shawl see my project page.

Instructions are charted only.

Bougainvillea is a cozy and modern shawl that features a combination of clean lines, simple lace border and a striking leaf silhouette. The shawl is knitted bottom-up with the border done simultaneously with the body. Grab your favorite yarn and have fun knitting.
