BRAIN HATS AT THE SCIENCE MARCH!!!
I saw so many brain hats at the science marches across the country yesterday, it was awesome!
When I first heard about brain hats being knitted for the science march back in January, I decided to make the pattern a free download as my way of showing support. Since then, there were OVER 12,700 DOWNLOADS!!! I’m so happy that people were able to express their love and support of science and research through the brain hat and by coming together for such a worthy cause.
Keep using those wonderful brains to come up with amazing new ideas and solutions to our world’s problems!

BRAIN HATS FOR SCIENCE!!!!!!
I’ve heard from a few people over the last few days that some science-inclined knitters have been planning to make brain hats for the potential scientist march on DC, similar to the pussy hats for the women’s march - which is AWESOME!!!
As a lover of nature and wilderness, a scientist (BS in biology), and a physician and surgeon, science plays a big role in my life - so as a show of support, I will be making the brain hat pattern a FREE RAVELRY DOWNLOAD FROM NOW UNTIL THE DAY OF THE MARCH so get a copy, get some yarn, and get your science on!!!

I will reiterate: THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL HAT FOR SALE! I don’t know how much more plainly I can state this. I also do not take commissions to make brain hats, due to time constraints while in school (although with all the demand, I’d probably make more money selling brain hats than the first 10 years of practicing medicine…)
If you are looking for a brain hat to purchase, you can check out brain hats made by JuliaPrickle at Goodsmiths and Etsy. Please note that Jane’s Creations is no longer making brain hats for now, but will post on her facebook page if that changes.

Thank you, everyone, for your continued enthusiasm and encouraging words :)

Quick note: PLEASE KNOW THIS IS A KNITTING PATTERN not an actual hat for sale!
I do not have any hats for sale. Unfortunately medical school takes up enough of my time that I am unable to make any hats for sale at this point. My best recommendation is to find a friend or family member that knits and bribe them with some delicious cookies.

Also, shout out to ZealofZebra and the very first Brain Hat. Pics of her project were published in the book 1,000 fabulous knit hats

Thank you! I really appreciate everyone’s comments and support :)

A note with the skull cap part of the pattern:
yes there is an odd number of CO stitches with the 1x1 rib - this number is needed in the body of the hat to make the left-leaning slant decreases line up with each other. Trust me.
If you want, you can cast on an even number of stitches, do the ribbing, and then just add/subtract a stitch once you get to the body of the hat, this will eliminate having an odd rib stitch.
But if you don’t care, then just stick with the original number of stitches.

Due to the recent surge of interest in this hat and the accompanying emails about construction, I have produced a pattern for the Brain Hat!
There are plenty of tips and tricks, and lots of pics.
Please ask me any questions you still have. I did make this hat over a year ago - so the pattern was written retroactively and I knitted up some new examples to photograph.

Thank you for supporting a poor, starving medical student who’s in hopeless debt!
