When I really got into the swing of knitting, I was living in Northern Virginia and Fibre Space was my LYS. Located in Old Town Alexandria, it still makes a great day trip from my current location—a little lunch, a little playtime along the banks of the Potomac, and then a little yarn shopping.
It was on just such a trip last autumn that I encountered a stunning combination of yarns in shades of brown and blue that I immediately decided had to be made into a shawl. Not a wispy, lacy shawl, but something sturdy and cozy—something you might see Claire wearing as she traipses through the Scottish highlands or North Carolina back country on Outlander. Bit of brioche notwithstanding—perhaps a bit too precious for a truly utilitarian accessory—Cautious Tones is the end result of that endeavor. It’s a thick, warm layer full of texture, perfect to fend off the chill of the mistiest moors or iciest mountains.

Sizes: One size, approx. 65”/165 cm wide across top and 28”/71 cm deep

Gauge: 20 sts and 24 rows = 4”/10 cm in garter stitch, blocked
Exact gauge is not essential but it will impact the final dimensions of your shawl and the amount of yarn used.

Yarn: Brooklyn Tweed Shelter, American Targhee-Columbia wool, 140 yd/2 oz (128 m/50 g): 2 skeins in Almanac (MC) and Spincycle Yarns Dream State, 100% American wool, 150 yd/2 oz (137 m/50 g): 1 skein each in Robin’s Egg and Stay Ready (CC)
Or approx. 280 yd/256 m worsted weight yarn for a MC and 300 yd/274 m in a CC
The sample used nearly all of the yardage of the main color, so you may wish to purchase an additional skein to be on the safe side.

Suggested needles: US 8/5 mm 24”/60 cm+ circular needle, or size to obtain gauge
US7/4.5 mm 24”/60 cm+ circular needle, or 1 size below gauge needle
