Like many of you, the holiday season is my favourite time to give handmade gifts.
These scrappy trivets are a beautiful and thoughtful gift to give alongside some of your holiday baking, a hostess gift at a potluck, or something creative for the other makers in your life.
The trivets are an excellent stash buster as even the smallest of special scraps can be used here.
Each side of the trivet is constructed modularly, and seemed together. Two blocks are then sandwiched together to made a double thick and reversible trivet, that is then finished with Kitchener stitch around the perimeter.
These trivets are like fun little puzzles! They knit up super fast and remain engaging the whole way through.
Round up all your scraps and let the colour stories begin!
Skills Used
German Twisted cast on, knitting flat, working with multiple colours, knitted bind off, picking up stitches, garter stitch grafting, Kitchener Stitch.
Materials:
Sample Yarn Used:
DK weight scraps in various colours, held double throughout.
Designer’s Note: The samples were all created from stash. I used a combination of scraps, leftovers and partial skeins to create the samples. DK weight wool yarn held double is used for this pattern. A wool blend is fine; I do not recommend using acrylic yarn if you intend to use the trivets as a hot pad, as acrylic may melt.
Approx. Yardage: 293 m/320 yds DK weight yarn total per trivet. The yardage is held double. See p. 3 for breakdown of quantities per colour.
Needles & Notions:
• 5.5 mm/US 9, 80 cm/32” circular needles or needle size required to match gauge;
• A second set of the same size needles for finishing the trivet block;
• Blocking pins;
• Darning needle
Gauge: 16 sts & 36 rows = 4”/10 cm, garter stitch knit flat.
Measurements:
The Patchwork Trivet is approx. 23 cm/9” x 20 cm/8”; The Log Cabin Trivet is approx. 8”/20 cm x 8”/20 cm.
