The Cushendale Coat is a classic-inspired quilted coat knit in untreated Irish wool and luxurious silk mohair. The DK weight wool is firm and strong, ideal for outerwear. Pair this with a second lace weight yarn held double, luxurious and soft, and you get a coat with a woolly outer layer and a delicate inner layer. The contrast in fabrics is echoed in the all-over diamond pattern, creating a chic yet protective outer shell and a next-to-skin soft inner layer.

Worked from the top-down, the Cushendale Coat uses 2-stitch 2-colour cables to create the diamond pattern. The all-over colourwork pattern is simple to execute and very intuitive.

The coat is worked flat to start to tailor fully-fashioned (European) shoulders, set-in sleeves and neckline, then worked in-the-round with steeks in place for the centre opening and optional pockets. The sleeves are picked up from the body and a sleeve cap is worked flat using short rows, and then in-the-round to the cuff with decreases for a tapered fit. With the steeks cut open, the shaped collar and pockets are added along with i-cords and hidden buttons to finish the centre opening. Extra-soft folded hem, cuffs and collar facings finish the coat.

This construction makes for a traditional fitting coat: close fitting across the shoulders with some positive ease for comfort and movement in the upper sleeves and bust.

Pressure points include flat colourwork and WS cables (only for upper body & sleeve caps), steeks & cutting open your knitting!, and working from charts. The stitches are easy and construction is straight forward, and with help from the pattern and a bit of knitter’s intuition, this design will fly off the needles ☺︎

This PDF, printer-friendly pattern includes 10 sizes (70 - 170cm | 28 - 68in) with 2 body lengths, each fully charted along with written instructions, full schematic, construction and special technique notes and maps and visuals for steeking, sleeve shaping, and chart management. Written pattern and charts are in a separate files and charts files are separated by size for convenience.
