Pattern #5005

Both hat and scarf are designed using a garter ridge stitch and the linen stitch (aka, “tweed stitch” or “woven stitch”), which involves slipping every other stitch on every row, with the yarn held to the front of the fabric. The stitches are created differently in the round (hat) and flat (scarf).

The hat and scarf in the photo were knitted from color #010, Woad. The hat requires 2 skeins, and the scarf requires 2 skeins. I have knitted this hat & scarf three times, using the “Silky Wool” each time. This yarn works well because it is soft, light in weight, and yet cozily warm.

The finished hat measures approximately 22” in circumference. It is meant to comfortably fit a woman’s head. The hat is designed with 4 layers of fabric for all but the top of the hat. This effect is accomplished by doubling over the fabric and then folding over this doubled fabric. Your ears will be happy even in January! The top of the hat only has one layer so your head won’t get too hot. The hat is knitted from brim to crown, starting with a circular needle and changing to double pointed needles as necessary. Alternatively, you could knit the entire hat on double pointed needles or use one long circular needle (aka, “the magic loop”) or use two circular needles.
