Worked in the round, bottom up, this is a quick and easy knit and makes a great last-minute holiday gift; it is also very suitable for charity knitting. The fabric has the texture of cables, but is actually a combination of ribbing and right twists.

The knobbly texture makes me think of rocks and boulders, so I call the hat “Dimrill Dale” (the valley outside Moria surrounded by the rocky walls of the Misty Mountains).

I used 4.5mm needles and Madelinetosh Tosh Vintage for the gray model - and 5mm needles and Red Heart Heat Wave for the white model (with different starting stitch counts). The hat size is easily modifiable by altering the starting stitch counts (which must be a multiple of 10) and the number of 8-row repeats.
