This pattern is mainly just a chart for the DNA graphic. It’s NOT a tutorial in how to double knit. However, assuming you can knit and purl, the following links should explain all the techniques needed to make the scarf.

Although this was my first double knitting project, I don’t really recommend trying this one as your first if you are not comfortable with complicated stranded knitting since the pattern is not repeating. It took me a while to get in the groove and get used to reading my knitting. A simple pattern would make it easier to see what was happening.

The chart was adapted (by making it run vertically instead of horizontally) from my Central Dogma Hat design, if you’re looking for a companion piece of DNA-wear.

Any reasonable yarn/needle combination should work for this pattern. Because double knitting is twice as thick, I chose a thin yarn. Be careful using loose gauge to reduce thickness since you don’t want to see the ugly “inner workings” of your double knit. Also, I opted to keep the scarf on the thinner side so that the pattern would stay visible around the neck and it would not fold over (double knit is too bulky/stiff to really bunch up).
