The Dubhlinn Summer Shell highlights a new way to work a faux cable. The technique is based on the Showy Decrease which has been used in other patterns to add texture to stockinette, create deep ribs or add pattern to garter stitch.

Try the Technique
There is a free starter pattern included with the top. The Dubhlinn Cowl uses the same faux cable pattern with an interesting cast on and bind off to add stretch. You can find the free pattern on the blog here:

The Summer Shell
Gauge for the top is 21 sts per 4” (10cm) in stockinette. I did make a second sample with a sport weight yarn knit more loosely at the 21 st gauge and it worked well.

The shell is knit in the round from the bottom up and includes increases across the front under the bust area. The transition from rib to stockinette plus the increases adds 2” to the bust area. It’s easy to adjust for larger bust sizes with additional increases and depth.

The center faux cable section forms a natural curve. It can be blocked wither straight or as a shirt tail. We blocked the front straight and used the shirt tail in the back.

The Flat i-Cord
The pretty knotted straps are created with Flat i-Cords. These i-cords can be knit on straight needles without sliding the stitches back to the other end again and again and they really are flat. You can read more about the Flat i-Cord straps in this blog post:
