This love knot crochet pattern is updated with a stitch diagram and more, as of September 2014. The original edition appeared in the Summer 2013 issue of Interweave Crochet magazine.

Optical illusions are built into this design, which contribute to its celestial effect. I’ve republished this with a stitch diagram because without one, the pattern is counterintuitive for some crocheters at first.

Love knots also serve as their own foundation chains and turning chains to preserve the floaty effect along the edges. The yarns used contribute yet another (heavenly) illusion.

Love knots are traditionally used to make a lacy square-holed net instead of this triangle-holed (a.k.a. “Delta lace”) version. Please see issue #62 of my Crochet Inspirations Newsletter about this flower-like hexagonal lace structure. You can see all of my love knot patterns here.

Skill Level: Advanced Intermediate. The pattern may start off challenging for you until you get used to the optical illusions of this design. See my “How to Crochet Love Knots” tutorial and an Electra Q & A blog post.

After using this pattern, you will know (if you didn’t already):

  • How to crochet love knots (a.k.a. lover’s knot, Solomon’s knot, knot stitch)
  • How to understand the visual illusion of this starry “delta lace” type of love knot mesh.
  • How to reinforce their joining knots for this type of lace pattern.
  • How to finish the edges with picot love knots.
  • How to enjoy crocheting with fine mohair, and those tempting specialty yarns that have sequins and other notoriously tricky textures!

From the magazine edition of the pattern:
Two ethereal yarns are combined in a starry love knot mesh, resulting in a heavenly cloud. The lacy mohair love knots create quiltlike air bubbles, making this crochet wrap warmer than it looks. The reversible wrap, which incorporates strategies that are handy to know when crocheting love knots, is edged as you crochet it in one continuous piece.

Notions: Yarn needle.
1 or 2 stitch markers may come in handy at first.
Gauge: 4 sts = 5” and 8 rows = 4½“ in patt.
